The Umanu were originally a peace-loving race that settled the Cloud Nebula together with the Lowar. About four hundred years ago, the Umanu developed powerful weapons and destroyed the Lowar. Since then, the Umanu have patrolled the Cloud destroying any alien ship they find. No one knows why, but the Umanu have become extremely hostile and dangerous. Only ships who have acquired advanced technology should attempt to venture far into the Cloud. The Spemin discovered this technology and used it to threaten Arth with forcible subjugation, though they never acted on their threats.

The human descendants of the Noah 6 colony group that was sent out during the last days of the Old Empire, the Umanu arrived in the Leghk Sector with the Lowar (Noah 6 Elowan) 800 years ago and settled the Cloud Nebula. Four hundred years ago the offspring of the Uhl entity that possessed the Leghk came to the Cloud and took control of the Umanu, forcing them to kill off their peaceful Lowar neighbors and cease all outgoing shyneum shipments. Their reign of terror within the Cloud raged like an inferno until they were freed of the Uhl in 4641 by a Noah 2 (Arthling) crew.
